Athletic Championship is the largest provider of two day cheer and dance national competitions. With the best in athleticism, a team spirit and a bonding atmosphere, our championships are the places where friends come to compete.
Company History
The first Athletic Championship event took place in February of 2001 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Ninety-two teams participated in the event, which was held at the Soldiers and Sailors Auditorium in downtown Chattanooga. The following year, Athletic grew to 3 events in Atlanta, Tunica and Chattanooga with over 300 participating teams.
In May of 2002, Mike Martinez, current president of Athletic, took over management of Athletic Championships from Premier Athletics and made it into its own entity called Athletic Championships, LLC. That competitive season, Athletic grew to 4 events (adding Winston-Salem) with over 450 participating teams.
At the end of the 2002 season, Athletic grew to four full-time employees with a corporate office located in Powell, TN. The next year, Athletic produced 8 events adding 4 new cities and having its biggest growth year to date with over 1000 participating teams. In 4 short years, Athletic Championships achieved a level of growth, a brand and a customer base, which has taken many of its competitors over 10 years to match.
In the 2004-2005 season, Athletic Championships grew to close to 2000 teams participating in 14 events across the country.
In July of 2005, Varsity Brands, Inc. acquired Athletic Championships. Athletic rolled into the 2005-2006 season with the addition of two new events in Upper Marlboro and Hot Springs. This brought Athletic Championships’s event total to 16 two-day national championship events. With events from Providence, Rhode Island, to Palm Springs, California, Athletic had become the most expansive company in the industry.
